My
name is Judith Zarazua, I'm an 18 year old female who enjoys spending time on
outdoor activities. One of my favorite activities is swimming, whether it's man
made or natural bodies of water, if it is swim-able I'd like to be in it. As
someone who loves aquatic environments it saddens me to see polluted and toxic
bodies of water. We need to start taking care of our planets water supply for
many, many reasons. Galveston, being so near to Houston could be a great place
for us and neighboring cities to start contributing.

Galveston, TX
I am sure all
Houston residents and other neighboring cities know about the crisis happening
with Galveston's beach; Galveston Bay is heavily polluted due to increasing
runoff pollution from industry, roads, agriculture, and septic tanks.
Pollution has only increased over the years and since the
1950's, most of the sea grass beds in Galveston Bay have been lost, causing
harm to the marine life.
More than 2,500 acres of freshwater wetlands are lost in the
bay per year due to development in the recent years.
Besides the toxic chemicals poured in the water, littering by
civilians also highly contributes to the problem.
Heal the bay

Heal the Bay is an organization dedicated to cleaning and
protecting our bodies of water. Although located in California, Heal the bays
website provides information over various topics such as environmental
education, ways to volunteer, and work they are currently participating on. We
can all help preserve our planets water. Visit your nearest bay and contribute
by picking up trash and raising awareness to residents of the area. A great
place for Houston residents to start is Galveston, TX as it is in need of
extreme help.
